Another difficult drama is unfolding these days in the Lower Galilee, as Farsan Hayeb, a 35-year-old resident of Nazareth, was shot dead today (Friday) in Reineh. The tragic shooting incident symbolizes another peak in the ongoing cycle of violence afflicting Arab society, as just two and a half years ago, his 33-year-old brother Firas and his two-year-old nephew Fares were murdered in Nazareth.
A report of the shooting was received at the Magen David Adom 101 emergency center at 15:54. Emergency teams arriving at the scene found Hayeb with no signs of life, with penetrating injuries to his body. MDA paramedic Amjad Nicola described the difficult scene: "We were led to the wounded man who was lying unconscious without a pulse and without breathing with penetrating injuries to his body. We performed medical examinations, but his injury was severe, and we had to pronounce his death at the scene".
Police announced that they have opened an investigation into the incident and reported that the background is criminal, and circumstances are still under investigation. "Police officers were dispatched to the scene, began searches to locate suspects in the shooting, and opened an investigation into the circumstances of the case", the police statement said. However, the central question remains unanswered: Is this a direct continuation of the murder of his family members about two and a half years ago, or is there another motive?
The murder of Farsan Hayeb adds to the disturbing statistic that since the beginning of the year, 63 people have already been murdered in Arab society, a number that reflects the scope of the escalating phenomenon of violence. The case of the Hayeb family clearly emphasizes the tragic consequences of violence, which in this case has already claimed the lives of three members of one family in less than three years, including a toddler only two years old.
In light of the concerning data, voices in Arab society calling for a determined fight against the phenomenon are growing. Last March, MK Iman Khatib-Yasin commented on the issue on X: "The rising crime and violence in Arab society are not a decree of fate. They are a direct result of structured government policy, and of the failed behavior of the police, which abandons the lives of Arab citizens and does not take the necessary actions to eradicate crime".
Despite many declarations and promises from political and security officials, data on the ground indicates that no significant change has yet occurred. MK Khatib-Yasin has raised the issue many times in the last two years, both on social media and within the framework of committees she initiated, but according to sources in Arab society, the phenomenon continues to spread without an adequate response.
To date, no concrete government plans have been published to deal with the phenomenon comprehensively. The bereaved families and affected communities continue to pay a heavy price, as illustrated by the tragedy of the Hayeb family, which lost three of its sons in a short period of time.
The sequence of violent events and the lack of root treatment of the phenomenon raise pointed questions about the ability and will of the authorities to deal with the rising violence. Many families in Arab society live in constant fear, as the circles of revenge and violence continue to expand and the human cost intensifies.
Will this be the case that leads to real change in government and police policy? Time will tell. At present, the communities of Reineh and Nazareth are coping with another loss, and the Hayeb family adds another name to the list of victims, which is already far beyond any reasonable measure.
