This historic step marks a new chapter in relations between the countries, which began with Israel's recognition of Moldova's independence in 1991. The Foreign Minister also met with Moldova's Prime Minister to discuss expanding cooperation in agriculture, innovation, and tourism.

In a historic ceremony held today, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar inaugurated Israel's Embassy in Moldova – a step marking significant development in relations between the two countries. This is the first time since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992 that Israel has established a permanent diplomatic mission in the Eastern European country.

The festive opening ceremony was attended by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi. "This is a historic moment that marks a milestone in relations between our countries," Sa'ar said in his speech. "Moldova is a friendly nation to Israel, and our policy will be to strengthen relationships with our friends."

During his visit to Moldova, Sa'ar also met with Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean. The two discussed strengthening cooperation in various fields, including agriculture, innovation, and tourism. Additionally, the leaders emphasized their shared commitment to democratic values and combating antisemitism.

Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi emphasized that the embassy's opening marks "a new chapter in partnership" between the countries. During the meeting between the foreign ministers, possibilities for cooperation in security, technology, cyber, agriculture, and energy were discussed.

Relations between Israel and Moldova began with Israel's formal recognition of Moldova's independence in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. A year later, in 1992, full diplomatic relations were established between the countries. Moldova opened its embassy in Israel in 1994, while Israel was until now represented by a non-resident ambassador.

The decision to open the Israeli Embassy in Moldova was made by Foreign Minister Sa'ar in December 2024, as part of Israel's policy to strengthen diplomatic ties. The embassy's opening is expected to help strengthen bilateral relations and promote mutual interests between the two countries.
