Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a sharp threatening statement yesterday against the Houthi organization in Yemen, following a day of tension and pressure that gripped the entire country in the wake of ballistic missile threats from Yemen. In a public message published by Katz, he made clear that "the Houthis will pay compound interest for every attempt to fire toward Israel", and added that "we are imposing an air and naval blockade on them that causes them great pain, and we attacked infrastructure and energy targets this morning".

The Defense Minister did not stop there and emphasized that the current operations are "only the beginning", with "what follows will be strong and painful." In the most threatening part of his statement, Katz declared: "Whoever raises a hand against Israel – his hand will be cut off".

Yesterday was a particularly tense day, following the firing of a ballistic missile toward Israel. The country's citizens were forced to deal once again with a real threat, while the terror coming from Yemen continued to cast a shadow over their daily routine. Feelings of pressure and anxiety were renewed, as this country, under Houthi control, continues to serve as a base for hostile operations against Israel.

The source of the current tension lies in the public declaration by the Houthi organization of opening war against Israel, shortly before the recent events occurred. This organization, which enjoys extensive support from Iran, has turned Yemen into a persistent strategic threat hub and uses its territory as a foundation for establishing itself and continuing its terrorist activity against the State of Israel.

The central event that led to the escalation was the launch of a ballistic missile from Yemen toward Israel yesterday. IDF forces succeeded in intercepting the missile, and to the country's great fortune, impact was avoided and no one was injured. Security sources described this as a "miracle", considering the potential for extensive damage that could have been caused had the missile hit its target.

In response to the missile fire, Israel launched extensive retaliation operations. According to the Defense Minister's words, Israel attacked infrastructure and energy targets in Yemen this morning as part of the effort to cause pain to the Houthis and damage their operational capabilities. Additionally, Israel imposed an air and naval blockade on Yemen, a step designed to limit the organization's movement and supply capabilities.

The air and naval blockade constitutes a comprehensive strategy aimed at applying coordinated pressure on the Houthis from multiple fronts simultaneously. These measures are intended to block the flow of combat means and military equipment to the organization, particularly those flowing from Iran, thereby significantly damaging its ability to maintain its combat system and conduct its operations against the State of Israel.

The Defense Minister's threats attest to Israel's intention to respond with particular sharpness to those who confront it. The use of the expression "his hand will be cut off" regarding those who raise a hand against Israel conveys a clear message about the high level of Israeli determination to defend itself and deter its enemies.

The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, have taken control of extensive parts of Yemen in recent years and acquired advanced military capabilities with Iranian assistance. They have become a destabilizing factor in the Middle East and a threat to international shipping routes in the region.

Israel views Houthi activity as part of the broad Iranian threat array against it, which includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, Shiite militias in Syria and Iraq, and Iranian forces in various locations throughout the region. Dealing with the Yemeni threat constitutes part of the overall strategy against what Israel calls the Iranian "axis of evil".

Yesterday's sirens reminded Israelis of the complex security reality in which they live, where threats can come from distant directions and not only from familiar fronts. The ongoing tension from Yemen adds to the long list of security challenges that Israel faces on a daily basis.

Following the events, senior security officials are conducting ongoing situation assessments in preparation for the next steps in the struggle against the Houthis, with it being clear that Israeli policy will be one of decisive and prolonged response to any fire coming from the direction of Yemen.
