Dim Amor

Russia is sharpening its position against Israel and working with full force to establish a special UN session on ceasefire, according to reports in Russian media. The move comes against the backdrop of sharp escalation in the Israeli-Iranian confrontation, as Moscow harshly condemns Israeli military operations and seeks to position itself as a regional mediator.

The dramatic events in the region were discussed today in a telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of Russia and Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, following the conversation held by the leaders of both countries yesterday. Lavrov emphasized in the conversation that Moscow condemns the Israeli military action and expressed condolences to his Iranian counterpart regarding the high number of casualties from Israeli strikes. The Russian foreign minister added that Russia is prepared to assist in calming the conflict.

Meanwhile, additional details are emerging about the complex diplomacy taking place behind the scenes. U.S. President Donald Trump referred yesterday to his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting that most of the conversation dealt with Iran, which Putin "knows excellently". Trump added that both agreed that the war between Iran and Israel should end as soon as possible.

Last evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also held a conversation with Putin, who offered to mediate "to prevent escalation". In a statement published by the Kremlin, Putin noted in his conversation with Netanyahu the "need for a peaceful solution and return to a negotiation process". The move indicates a Russian attempt to position itself as a central mediator in the conflict.

In a separate conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin described the Israeli attack against Iran's nuclear facilities as "dangerous escalation." The Kremlin statement emphasized that Moscow condemns the attack that "violates the UN Charter and international law." Putin expressed his "condolences" to Pezeshkian regarding the loss of life in Iran and called for resolving the nuclear crisis through diplomatic means.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov officially declared that Russia condemns the sharp escalation in the confrontation between Israel and Iran and expresses concern about the growing tension between the countries. According to him, President Vladimir Putin is being continuously updated on developments. Peskov added that the Russian Foreign Ministry, under presidential guidance, is expected to soon publish a detailed statement regarding the situation in the Middle East, which will also be transmitted to the United Nations.

However, Russian moves raise questions about the real motives behind Russian condemnation. Since 2014, Russia has been conducting extensive military operations in Ukraine, occupied the Crimean Peninsula, and committed acts described as war crimes. President Putin is even wanted by the International Court in The Hague for crimes in Ukraine. According to estimates, approximately one million people have been killed and hundreds of thousands wounded in the war in Ukraine since its beginning.

Additionally, Russia benefits from Middle Eastern escalation in economic terms as well. The rise in oil prices recorded following Israeli strikes serves Moscow's interests, as it operates under heavy international sanctions. Rising prices give the besieged Russian economy breathing room and provide it with vital maneuvering space in the global arena.

The complex picture indicates a pragmatic Russian policy based on geopolitical and economic interests. Moscow tries to maintain relations with Iran as a strategic ally while attempting to position itself as a leading regional mediator. At the same time, it benefits from the economic consequences of regional instability.

The Russian paradox is expressed in the fact that a country conducting a comprehensive invasion of its neighbor condemns military actions by another country. This testifies to Moscow's double standards policy, which tries to exploit the Middle Eastern crisis to strengthen its international standing while ignoring its own actions in Europe.

The Russian attempt to establish a UN session on ceasefire constitutes part of its efforts to position itself as a mediating power, parallel to attempts to divert attention from its actions in Ukraine. The diplomatic maneuver indicates Russia's desire to return to the center of the international stage, even when it is itself isolated by the international community.

Recent diplomatic moves point to a complex reality where economic and geopolitical interests guide Russian policy more than moral or legal principles. Russia tries to exploit the current crisis to strengthen its position as a regional power while utilizing economic opportunities arising from instability.

In this context, the central question is whether Russia is truly interested in genuine de-escalation in the Middle East, or whether it sees the crisis as an opportunity to advance its interests. The answer will become clear in the coming weeks, when it will be tested whether Russian diplomatic moves will lead to concrete actions or remain at the rhetorical level only.

Time will tell whether Russia will succeed in realizing its aspirations to establish itself as a central mediator in the Middle East, or whether its double standards policy will expose the widening gap between its declarations and its actions. In the complex geopolitical reality of this time, there is no room for diplomatic improvisation, and Russian moves will be judged according to their concrete results and not according to their public statements.

P.S. Nevertheless, it is clearly evident how Russia does not hesitate to abandon its allies when necessary. This year we witnessed this distinctly in the Syrian arena – for Russia has interests, but it doesn't really have friends.

"We have not withdrawn from any position", declares a senior Russian general.

The Russian army has expanded its military activity along the buffer zone on the Israel-Syria border in the Golan Heights, as reported yesterday (Monday) by the official Syrian news agency "SANA". According to the report, two new military positions have been established, joining seven existing positions in the area.

Deputy Commander of Russian Forces in Syria, General Alexander Rodionov, denied opposition reports about the evacuation of Russian positions in the region. "Not only have we not withdrawn from any position, but we have also increased our presence at several points along the border," Rodionov told the news agency.

The expansion of Russian presence comes amid growing tensions between Moscow and Jerusalem. Last week, Putin's representative for Syrian affairs, Alexander Lavrentiev, raised accusations against Israel regarding an attack carried out in early October near the Russian Hmeimim base. In an interview with "RIA Novosti" news agency, Lavrentiev claimed that the Israeli attack endangered the lives of Russian soldiers.

"The attack was not directed at the base itself, as this would have had serious consequences for Israel, and they are well aware of this," said Lavrentiev. "According to our information, the target was a warehouse or another building in the area". He added that Russia lodged a strong protest with Israel following the incident.

A senior Syrian army official told "SANA" that Russian military police units play a central role in stabilizing the security situation in the area. According to him, their presence helps local residents return to their homes and daily routines "after the area was liberated from terrorism".

The Russian presence in Syria began in 2015, when Moscow responded to the Assad regime's request to intervene in the country's civil war. Since then, Russia has become a key player in the Syrian arena, establishing its strategic influence in the region.

Recent developments highlight the growing complexity of Israel-Russia relations, particularly against the backdrop of the situation in Syria. The increased Russian presence in the buffer zone may affect Israel's freedom of operation in the area and its ability to act against security threats on its northern border.

The disturbing footage shows a blatant violation of the Geneva Conventions and international law, raising serious questions about Russia's conduct in the ongoing conflict.

Where is the UN? Where are human rights organizations? Why is the world asleep?

The video shows Russian soldiers forcing Ukrainian prisoners, at gunpoint, to sing the Russian national anthem. Beyond psychological humiliation, they call the prisoners derogatory names and subject them to physical violence. The distressing images depict cruel and inhumane treatment of defenseless individuals, clearly violating basic human rights.

International law experts define the documented acts as severe war crimes. They call on the international community to take immediate action against those responsible and bring them to justice. However, criticism is heard regarding the lack of a meaningful response from the UN and human rights organizations.

The footage raises deep concern for the fate of additional prisoners of war held by Russian forces. Ukrainian officials are calling for increased international pressure on Moscow and the imposition of further sanctions. Meanwhile, the international community is urged to act urgently to ensure the protection of civilians and captured soldiers in combat zones.

A Hamas delegation visit to Moscow is scheduled for June 24 against the backdrop of antisemitic incidents and the arson of two synagogues. Moscow officially supports Hamas and views the organization as a political movement fighting for Palestinian freedom. It should be noted that following the events of October 7, Moscow unilaterally announced its recognition of the State of Palestine and opened a Palestinian embassy in Moscow.

In Moscow, Hamas representatives are expected to meet with high-ranking officials from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Palestinian delegation will be led by Musa Abu Marzuk, deputy head of Hamas's political bureau. It's worth noting that in late October of last year, Hamas representatives were invited to Moscow, and Russia reaffirmed its unwavering position on establishing a "sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital".

"Hamas highly appreciates the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as the efforts of active Russian diplomacy", the organization stated.

In early October, Vladimir Putin called the blockade of the Palestinian enclave unacceptable and compared Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip to the Nazi siege of Leningrad in 1941-1944.

However, on October 7, Hamas kidnapped and abused Jews with dual citizenship (Russian and Israeli). This fact did not concern Putin, and Russia took no action to free the hostages.

According to official reports, approximately 15 people were killed and 44 injured in a series of attacks targeting synagogues, churches, and police stations.

In the Russian republic, two synagogues were simultaneously attacked – in Makhachkala and Derbent. The synagogue in Derbent was completely burned down. In Dagestan (a Russian republic) on Sunday, June 23, a series of attacks were carried out in two cities. In Derbent, terrorists opened fire with automatic weapons on a synagogue. Grenades were thrown at the synagogue, resulting in a fire. The synagogue was completely destroyed. Another fire broke out at the synagogue in Makhachkala (the capital of Dagestan). The causes of this fire are yet to be determined. It should be noted that the synagogue is located near a police station that was also attacked by gunfire. Additionally, social media users noticed that someone had written the numbers 2:120 on the doors of the Makhachkala synagogue, speculating that this might be a reference to the second surah of the Quran, verse 120.

Russian sources attribute the attack to an "international terrorist organization", in what appears to be a clear allusion to ISIS. The gunmen, whose exact number is still unknown, simultaneously attacked two synagogues and two churches in the area, leaving destruction and devastation in their wake. Additionally, a police station was fired upon, indicating prior planning and the complexity of the operation. Among the casualties, according to reports, are "more than 15 police officers", along with an unknown number of civilians. Russian security forces responded swiftly and, according to reports, managed to eliminate six of the terrorists. However, the damage had already been done, and the disturbing images from the attack sites attest to the scale of the disaster.

One of the most tragic incidents occurred in a local church, where 66-year-old priest Nikolai Kotelnikov was brutally murdered. According to witnesses, "the priest's throat was slit", an act indicating the extreme violence employed during the attack. Simultaneously, it was reported that one of the attacked synagogues caught fire, although at this stage there are no known casualties among the local Jewish community.

These grave events raise pointed questions about President Vladimir Putin's policies and Russia's approach to Islamic terrorism. Critics argue that this is a direct result of the "turning a blind eye" policy adopted over the years. They recall previous incidents, such as the pogrom at the airport and the attack on a plane arriving from Tel Aviv, which they claim did not receive an adequate response from the government. Moreover, Russia's complex relationships with organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah, along with its ties to various Afghan elements, draw additional criticism. The claim is that this policy, combined with the acceptance of Palestinian refugees, has created an atmosphere that allows extremists to operate more easily on Russian soil.

Experts also point to the Putin government's disregard for the phenomenon of Dagestan residents joining ISIS ranks in recent years. They argue that the failure to take decisive action against this trend ultimately led to the current violent outbreak, including pogroms, synagogue burnings, and acts of antisemitism.

While the Kremlin has yet to officially respond to these claims, it is clear that the events in Dagestan represent a significant turning point in Russia's fight against terrorism. The central question now is how Putin's government will respond to this new-old challenge and what steps it will take to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, the residents of Dagestan and the entire region are trying to recover from the severe trauma. Russian security forces have increased their presence in the area and are conducting extensive searches in an attempt to locate additional suspects or active terrorist cells. Both Jewish and Christian religious communities are gathering for mourning and solidarity ceremonies, calling for unity and the rejection of violence.

The world is anxiously watching the developments in Russia, with questions arising about the potential implications of the event on international relations and the global fight against terrorism. It is clear to all that the events in Dagestan serve as a severe warning sign, necessitating a rethinking and formulation of a more effective strategy in the war against extremism and violence.

Two sons of the head of the Sergokalinsky district in Dagestan, Magomed Omarov, participated in the attack on Makhachkala on June 23.

Magomed Omarov

Security forces have identified three terrorists who were eliminated in Dagestan, according to law enforcement sources in Dagestan. They were identified as two sons and a nephew of Omarov. The district head himself has been arrested, and searches are being conducted at his home.

There is strong suspicion that Magomed Omarov's sons and nephew, apparently supported by the government, carried out attacks in the Dagestan region.

While Putin continues his "de-Nazification" operation in Ukraine, alarming signs of rising Nazism are emerging within Russia itself. Experts warn that the Kremlin is turning a blind eye to local neo-Nazi activity while accusing Ukraine of "Nazism". This development raises pointed questions about the integrity and consistency of Moscow's domestic and foreign policies.

Response from the Israeli Foreign Minister:

"A combined shooting incident occurred near the central Caucasus synagogue in Makhachkala and at a church in the city of Derbent. In Makhachkala, gunmen shot at two non-Jewish guards of the synagogue and a police car, and set fire to the synagogue hall. There were no worshippers in the building at the time of the incident.

So far, there are no known Jewish or Israeli casualties.

Further details will be provided as they become available".
